VOICES OF

WCS STUDENTS

Sharing stories of racism and discrimination in hopes to inspire change and reflection of ways in which we have all fallen short.

Posts have been edited to remain anonymous. The purpose of this is not to incite anger but to instead allow a collective reflection of discrimination and racism in the education system. We believe in the WCS school system and want to learn from these stories to move forward together. Growth is an ongoing process and these posts are not for us to dwell on the past but to acknowledge it and continue on towards a more informed future. Often times stories are our most powerful teachers.

In light of the recent events surrounding the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery we have seen many stories shared from students about injustices that occurred during their time at WCS middle and high schools. We want to compile these stories and share them with WCS administration encouraging them to play an active role in creating an equal and accepting environment.

What is extremely important to mention here is that the discrimination experienced by black communities has had a long, extensive history in our country. While many of the stories below are of injustice towards black students, we received many stories from students of other minority groups (culture, sexuality, ability) and did not want those stories to go unheard. We want to be clear that in no way are we making equal the black experience to these other stories. Thank you to the Black Lives Matter movement for encouraging this change and inspiring the work that we are doing to raise awareness in our county. We all hope to learn from these times and do better.
